Joining the SCHS coaching staff as assistant freshman coach for the 2015-16 season will be Sean Smetona, who with his father, John, will form the second family coaching staff in the Triton Basketball program. Brothers Oscar and Dan Montecinos coach the Triton JV.
A 2006 graduate of SCHS, Coach Smetona lettered in both basketball and volleyball during his high school career. Smetona says, “I didn't take the best route in high school, and had to work really hard to make up for some immature mistakes. The silver lining is it's helped me relate to young people in a 'don't try this at home' sort of way. I've mentored high school students through a program called Young Life, and |
that's also helped me grow as a person.”
Coach Smetona embraces the same coaching philosophy as his dad: “Coaching and sometimes yelling during practice, but being an uplifting cheerleader during games.” He adds, “I don't want kids to be afraid to take a shot, or afraid to fail. Of course, they have to work hard and be coachable.” Off the court, he works as a freelance designer specializing in brand development. Coach Smetona's hobbies include bodyboarding, Muay Thai, drums, guitar, volleyball and an occasional video game. He resides locally with his wife, Ashley, and a one-year-old daughter, Eve. |
