For the first six minutes of the game, it appeared as if neither team wanted to win with the score 3-2 in favor of the Dolphins. Substitutions by San Clemente coach Oscar Montecinos sparked the Tritons to life as they went on a 6-0 run to close the quarter and expanded it to 10-0 over the opening moments of the second period.
From there, San Clemente, for the most part, controlled the game, though the Dolphins did rally to tie it briefly midway through the third period. The Tritons pulled away in the fourth, particularly after starting point guard Blake Birmingham, who had been pretty quiet up until the point, went on a personal 9-0 scoring run. He recorded 12 of his game-high 14 points in the fourth period.
Other San Clemente scoring came from Jake Cameron and Daniel Mircheff with nine each; Evan Banks, eight; Joey Spurgeon, five; Aidan Butler, three; Dylan Hauser and Roberto Medrano, two each; and Isaac Rex, one.
The Triton Junior Varsity returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, January 29, when it hosts Tesoro.
