Six basketball players, including a pair of all-league starters, perform double duty by starring for the football team.
At this writing, Triton Football is preparing to host Trabuco Hills in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division Championship Game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 5.
This means, at the very least, Triton Basketball will be without six players for the first week of the season which encompasses the highly competitive Diablo Inferno Tournament at Mission Viejo High School.
But a win in the title game could propel Triton Football into the State Regional Championship Game on December 13. Moving on from there, the State Championship Game would not be until December 20, should the Tritons qualify.
Advancing that far would mean the basketball could be ten games into the season before it sees the two-sport stars. This includes not only the Diablo Inferno Tourna-ment, but also the Irvine World News Tournament (December 15-20), as well as individual games against Woodbridge (December 9) and La Jolla, the home opener, (December 13).
This also could affect the Triton Junior Varsity, which may see one of more players called up to bolster varsity depth.
Basketball players competing for the football championship are Sam Darnold, the 2012-13 league MVP in basketball; Cole Fotheringham, all-league second team in 2013-14; Dean Licht; Jake Russell; Shaughn Ritchie; and Riley Whimpey. Darnold, Russell and Whimpey are captains on the football team.
