Cox Channel 3 was on the scene to broadcast the contest as its game of the week. Also in the house were every coach in Triton Basketball history, as well as players named to the All-50 Team, the 50 greatest players in San Clemente Basketball history. For more on that, click here.
The win moves the Triton Varsity to 13-7 for the season and, importantly, 4-0 in the South Coast League at its halfway point. San Clemente returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 29, when it hosts a tough Tesoro squad in a non-league contest.
Against Dana, the Tritons jumped out to an early 12-2 lead, looking unstoppable as times. But time and again, they let the Dolphins creep back into the game. Dana got no closer than three points, and a mid-fourth quarter run allowed Coach Marc Popovich to clear his bench for the final 80 seconds.
A pair of double-doubles by life-long teammates Nick Crankshaw and Sam Darnold set the pace for San Clemente. Darnold recorded a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Crankshaw filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Additional Triton scoring came from Scott Herrod and Joe Mann with eight each; Gage Shelmidine, seven; Cade Griffin, four; Dillon Waikle, three; Shaughn Ritchie, two; and Dean Licht, one.
The Tritons played without sixth man Cole Fotheringham, who sat out with a back injury. His status is day-to-day.
