The Tritons led 29-23 with just seconds left in the third quarter when the Mustangs hit a desperation three-pointer to pull within three at the buzzer. The shot seemed to swing the momentum, as the Tritons surrendered the lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. They spent the rest of the game playing catch up.
Nonetheless, trailing 43-40 in the final 30 seconds, San Clemente had three different opportunities to tie the game. Trabuco scored its final two points at the free throw line when these attempts failed, forcing the Tritons to foul in the closing seconds.
Dylan Hauser led San Clemente scoring with 10 points. Dillon Waikle added 8. Aidan Butler and Brad Ross had 6 each; Lukas Katsandris, 4; and Andrew Frohner and Donte Harrington, 2 each.
The sophomores return to action at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in a non-league contest at Corona Del Mar.
