Leading 18-7 at the end of the first quarter and 40-19 at the half, the Tritons were able to play every available player and coast home with the win. They did so without starting power forward Cole Fotheringham, who was out with an illness only one game after joining the team upon the completion of his football season. Starting small forward James Paterson played, but is still working his way back from an illness that sidelined him for two weeks. And reserve guard/forward Isaac Rex is still probably a week away from playing basketball as he recovers from injuries sustained in CIF Divisional Football Championship game.
Even with their minutes limited as Coach Marc Popovich went deep into his bench in the blowout victory, Jake Cameron with 19 points and Dillon Waikle with 18 led Triton scorers. Waikle also pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds.
Additional San Clemente scoring was provided by Gage Shelmidine with 8 points; Blake Birmingham, 7; Dylan Hauser and Michael Moran, 6 each; James Paterson, 4; and Chris Kane, 2. Shelmidine had a game-high 7 assists.
The Triton Varsity returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it opens the Irvine World News Tournament against Irvine at Irvine High School.
