San Clemente trailed 34-30 at the half, before clamping down on defense, outscoring the Titans 15-7 in the third period. It was much the same in the fourth, during which the Tritons' margin was 13-5.
Putting on a show for his future football coach, senior Sam Darnold led Triton scorers with 21 points, coupled with a double-double producing 13 rebounds. USC Quarterbacks Coach Clay Helton was in the stands watching the Trojan-committed Darnold.
Joining Darnold in double figures was senior guard Cade Griffin, who scored 13, mostly on breakaways generated by the Triton defense. Another senior guard, Joe Mann, just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.
Early on, it appeared it would be all Crankshaw on offense. He recorded seven of his game-high eight assists in the first quarter alone. Those, coupled with the three-pointer he hit in the period for his only points of the game, mean he was involved in all but three of San Clemente's 17 first-quarter points. He also wound up with 13 rebounds and six steals.
Scott Herrod and Dillon Waikle each added six points to round out San Clemente scoring.
The Triton Varsity (14-7, 4-0) is on a seven-game win streak as it prepares to host Aliso Niguel at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a showdown between the South Coast League's top two teams.
