Coming off a 3-1 finish in last week's Estancia/Tustin Coast Classic, the 7-7 varsity will be facing one of it toughest challenges so far this season in Edison, which won the Estancia Tournament and at 12-2 is ranked 12th in this week's Orange County Register poll.
For the Tritons, the Estancia Tournament may prove to be an important marker in the season, as it included the return to action of 2012-13 league MVP Sam Darnold. He promptly went out and scored 22 points to go with 8 rebounds and 8 assists.
Hosting Edison will be the Triton Junior Varsity and Frosh. The junior varsity, whose game against Edison is at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Triton Gym, is looking to put behind it a 2-2 finish in the Dana Hills Tournament, which included losses to a Tesoro team it had beaten previously and to Capistrano Valley by two points in the consolation final. It will have opportunities later this month to avenge both losses.
On the other hand, the Triton Frosh are rolling with 11 straight wins and two consecutive tour nament championships going into their 4 p.m. Friday matchup against Edison. San Clemente also tuned up for this game by beating their dads by two points in overtime of the Fifth Annual New Year's Day Father-Son Classic. The frosh have won four out of five.
Not mentioned yet is the Triton Sophomore team, which will face Corona Del Mar instead of Edison at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Triton Gym. The Sea Kings promise to be a tough opponent, having won a preseason tourney.
As for the Tritons, they are hoping to be as close to 100 percent as they have been all season. They are off to a mis-leading 4-8 start, having played much of the first month without key personnel. Going into the Corona Del Mar game, they have two consecutive lop-sided wins.
