San Clemente moves on to face Westminster at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the second round of the Fountain Valley Tournament.
Four different players contributed to the Tritons' first 12 points, as they built an early lead. But a tightly officiated game caused Coach Matt Miller to avoid foul trouble by using 11 players, 10 of whom wound up scoring.
Point Guard James Paterson led a balanced Triton scoring attack with 13. Freshman Brandon Reaves added 11; Daniel Klevit, 9; Vince Smetona, 7; Rafael Caro and Dean Licht, 5 each; Cullen Tayrien, 4; Jake Cameron and Marcus Wilson, 3; and Ryan Martinez, 2. Klevit misses the first Triton double-double of the season, as he led the team with 11 rebounds.
Huntington Beach trailed 27-18 at the half, then rode three-point sharpshooting to close the gap to 41-38 after three periods. But the Triton pressure defense ultimately took its toll.
