Picking up where it left off at the end of summer play, the Triton Junior Varsity won another San Diego-based tournament to open the 2014-15 season, beating the host team 51-46 in the championship game of the Sage Creek Coastal Tipoff Classic. Previously, the Tritons won the UC San Diego Tournament at the end of summer.
With the Sage Creek win, San Clemente did a good job of representing Orange County, as its lone representative among a Who's Who of San Diego County basketball. In fact, the Tritons had to play their quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games all on their opponents' home courts.
Unlike the first three rounds, which were lop-sided Triton wins, San Clemente found itself in a battle in the final. It took an Isaac Rex three pointer with under 90 seconds to play to give the Tritons the lead for good. From there, they closed out the game at the free throw line, with their floor leader and leading scorer Blake Birmingham fouled out.
Before his disqualification, Birmingham put in 17 points to lead the Tritons. Rex with 12 was only other San Clemente player in double figures.
Daniel Mircheff scored seven; Roberto Medrano, six; Evan Banks, five; and Aidan Butler, four.
The junior varsity returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, when it travels to Woodbridge in Irvine.
