One more win by the Triton Varsity will earn the squad its seventh-consecutive CIF Playoff berth, a school record. Two wins will give the team at least a share of the league title, which would be its second in three years and only the third in school history. Previously, the school had to wait 38 years between championships.
But the path there is far from easy. On Wednesday, the first-place Triton Varsity (14-7, 4-0) begins the second half of league play when it hosts second-place Aliso Niguel (18-6, 4-1). The Wolverines only league loss was to the Tritons, 64-58, on Jan. 14 at Aliso.
On Friday at El Toro (15-8,2-3), the varsity faces a Chargers team that will be eliminated from championship contention with a loss, which could also impact its eligibility for a playoff berth, as third-place El Toro is only a game ahead of Dana Hills and Mission Viejo in the standings. Only the league's top three teams are assured of going to the postseason.
The lower divisions also could be a part of history, with all three in the championship hunt. San Clemente has never won league in all four divisions during the same season.
On the junior varsity level, the Tritons (18-2, 3-1) are alone in first place, one game ahead of its next three opponents, Aliso Niguel, El Toro and Mission Viejo, respectively.
The J.V. will have to play much better than it did in its league-opening 69-44 loss at Aliso. Prior to that, the Tritons had a 10-point win over Aliso in mid-December.
Then, much like the varsity, the J.V. will travel to third-place El Toro on Friday. The Tritons won, 65-58, in the teams' first league meeting.
And like the junior varsity, the Triton Soph has its fate in its own hands, starting the second half of league tied for first place at 10-6, 3-1. It defeated both Aliso and El Toro by double digits in their first league meetings.
Friday's home opponent, El Toro, gave the Triton Frosh (12-7, 3-1) its only league loss. So winning out would bring a freshman title, as well.
Wednesday's away opponent, Aliso, played the Triton Frosh tough in a 40-34 San Clemente win on Jan. 14.
The Frosh B, 7-3, plays Wednesday at Aliso (7 p.m.) and Friday at El Toro (4 p.m.), before the junior varsity game.
