In a game that had some Triton fans yelling "home cooking," San Clemente's Junior Varsity overcame hyperactive officials' whistles to beat tournament host El Toro 58-55 in the championship game. Nine personal fouls and three technicals were called on the Tritons in the first quarter alone. This hindered the normally active San Clemente defense, which ended the game with a season-low six steals, and allowed El Toro to take a 21-12 lead after one.
Despite nine more fouls called on the Tritons in the second period, the second unit led by sophomore forward Cullen Tayrien got San Clemente back in the game with a 30-30 tie at the half. Tayrien recorded 10 of his 17 points and 5 of his nine rebounds in the second quarter. Jake Cameron also was a big part of the second-unit surge, hitting three of four three-pointers en route to 11 points.
Starter Tyler Voigt had a team-high 18 points.Daniel Klevit added 7 points and 8 rebounds. Marcus Wilson had 3 points, and Brandon Reaves, 2.
The junior varsity breaks for the holiday before returning to play at 5:45 p.m. Dec. 26 against Tesoro in the opening round of the Dana Hills Tournament. San Clemente beat Tesoro 77-69 on Friday in the El Toro Tournament semifinal.
