The two leagues comprise the Coast View Athletic Association, which every two years realigns, with the top two Sea View programs moving up to the South Coast and the bottom two South Coast squads moving down to the Sea View.
In addition to Aliso and San Clemente, the South Coast League includes Dana Hills, El Toro and Mission Viejo. Dana is also making the move up in 2015, while Tesoro and Capistrano Valley move down to join Laguna Hills, San Juan Hills and Trabuco Hills in the Sea View.
Getting tested right from the start, the Tritons will face its highest-ranked SCL foes during the first week of the season. Most polls pick El Toro, San Clemente and Aliso as the top three teams in the league.
On the varsity level, the Tritons travel to Aliso Niguel for a 7 p.m. tip on Wednesday. Aliso opened league play on Friday with a 66-54 upset win over El Toro. It should be noted that this year's Wolverine Varsity includes seniors who were members of the 2011-12 frosh team that went 26-0.
On Friday, January 16, the Triton Varsity will host El Toro, which prior to its loss in the league opener was picked by most polls to win the league.
Carrying a 13-1 record and two pre-league tournament championships with it, the Triton Junior Varsity will look to keep things rolling in its 5:30 p.m. matchups preceding the varsity games.
The J.V. beat Aliso NIguel 54-44 on December 20 in the consolation championship of the El Toro Tournament. That tournament was won by the host team after the Tritons were defeated in the opening round by Trabuco Hills -- a loss the team later avenged.
El Toro beat Trabuco in the tournament championship game. But it also lost in the opening round of the Dana HIlls Tournament, which was won by the Tritons, to a Tesoro team San Clemente has defeated twice. El Toro also lost to Aliso 51-47 in its league opener.
On the sophomore level, the home game against Aliso at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday could be particularly interesting, as the two teams split two meetings during pre-league tournaments. Aliso won 45-42 on December 3 at Capo Valley, and San Clemente prevailed 35-28 on December 26 at Aliso Niguel.
On Friday, the sophomores will travel to face an El Toro team it has not seen during pre-league play. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
It would appear the Triton Frosh (8-5) could have its hands full in its 4 p.m. home game on Wednesday, as Aliso's frosh comes in at 12-5 on the season, including a 66-54 win over El Toro in its league opener.
However, the Triton Frosh (8-5) also comes in hot, winners in seven of their last eight games. Though they did not see Aliso in tournament play, the Tritons did beat El Toro twice, 58-35 and 49-34. They play at El Toro at 4 p.m. Friday.
The 6-1 Triton Frosh B also will travel to El Toro on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
