A 27-point first quarter gave San Clemente an 11-point lead, and it never trailed from there, outscoring Laguna Hills in every quarter.
Four Tritons scored in double figures, led by junior Cade Griffin with a varsity career-high 18. Sophomore Gage Shelmidine also scored a career high with 14, and remarkably he did it on only two field goal attempts. He was one of two on these, and added 12 made free throws. A second sophomore, Cole Fotheringham, was in double figures with 12, as was junior Elijah Morris, who scored all of his points on four-of-eight three-point shooting.
Nick Crankshaw had 8 points, along with a team-high 13 rebounds and three more blocked shots to add to his team-leading total. Austin Miller added 7 points and 8 boards; Scott Herrod and Rico Young, 3 points each; and Joe Mann, 1 point.
The varsity returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts its traditional rivalry game against Tesoro.
