Early on it didn't look like it was going to be that kind of game. San Clemente led only 16-15 after the first quarter of play. Then the Triton defense became smothering, holding La Costa Canyon to only three points in the second quarter while San Clemente put up 20 for a 40-18 lead.
In the second half, Coach Matt Miller ran in alternating shifts of five players to close out the game.
Overall, it was a balanced scoring attack led by Tyler Voigt with 17 and Jake Cameron with 13 as the only players in double figures. Marcus Wilson contributed 9; Dean Licht and Daniel Klevit, 8 each; Brandon Reaves and Jake Russell, 6 each; Rafael Caro, 5; Shaughn Ritchie, 4; and Cullen Tayrien, 2.
Russell was particularly noteworthy for his season-high seven assists in only his second game as the team's point guard, filling in for the injured James Paterson. He also had a game-high five steals. Klevit led the team in rebounds with nine.
The team returns to action Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of Edison and Mission Viejo at El Toro.
Notes: Ryan Martinez (illness), Joey Giazzon, James Paterson (hip) and Tucker Scott (foot) were unavailable to play.
