The Tritons (3-4, 12-13) had already secured third place in the Sea View League and the automatic CIF 1AA Playoff berth that comes with it. The team was looking to get on a roll going into the playoffs. It appeared San Clemente might do exactly that as it closed the third quarter strong with a 45-41 lead. But that momentum was short-lived. San Juan Hills went on a 10-run to begin the final period, then extended the run to 17-5.
The Tritons managed to close within three points with possession of the ball in the final half minute of the game, but could not get off a good shot attempt.
The loss squandered a double-double performance from Nick Crankshaw, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double figures for San Clemente were Cade Griffin and Austin Miller with 16 points each. Cole Fotheringham with 8 and Gage Shelmi-dine with 2 rounded out the Triton scoring.
The Triton Varsity concludes the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday at San Juan Hills.
