Trailing 43-42, Hauser was at the free throw line with 29 seconds remaining to shoot two. He missed them both. On the other end, Tesoro seemed intent on running out the clock. And with only two team fouls, San Clemente could not force the Titans to make their foul shots.
However, a Tesoro player apparently saw an opening for a potential game-clinching shot, which Katsandris defended, then rebounded the miss and threw an on-target outlet pass to a wide-open Hauser streaking down the left sideline. Hauser's layup with nine seconds remaining gave the Tritons a 44-43 lead.
Then, able to play aggressive defense because they had only two team fouls, the Tritons forced a Titan turnover. Tesoro had to foul Hauser with a second remaining in the game. He made the first free throw and, as directed by Coach Chris Schefter, intentionally missed the second, with time expiring on the rebound.
Aidan Butler and Andrew Frohner both had strong defensive and rebounding games for San Clemente, and chipped in 9 and 7 points, respectively. Dillon Waikle added 5, and Donte Harrington had 3.
The win is the Triton Sophomores' ninth in their last 10 games, and moves them to 11-9 for the season. It is also the fifth time since December 28 that the team has avenged a loss it suffered earlier in the season while missing key personnel.
The Triton Sophomores return to action at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a league game at Dana Hills.
