Closing out a tournament in which they were never truly challenged, the Triton Freshmen won their second consecutive tournament championship today by defeating Aliso Niguel 49-39 in the title game of the El Toro Tournament. The win will give the Tritons a 12-1 record heading into a trio of non-league home games led off by a matchup against Edison at 4 p.m. January 3 in Triton Gym.
The Tritons advanced to the championship finale by beating the host team to open the event, blowing out San Juan Hills by 30 in the quarterfinals, and cruising by Capistrano Valley in the semis. In the championship game, Aliso Niguel kept it close early, trailing by only six at the half. But relentless pressure defense began to wear the Wolverines down before the Tritons put the game away with a run early in the fourth quarter.
Point guard Blake Birmingham led San Clemente's scoring with 21 points, including three three-pointers. Joey Spurgeon added 14. Ricardo Ashe and James VanGinkel contributed 6 each, and Chris DeGrazia rounded out the scoring with 2.
