Located less than a mile from San Clemente High School, Shorecliffs Middle School has long been known for its many national champion surf teams. The success of this year's league champion Triton Varsity and its many senior members, five of whom are Shorecliffs alums, poses an interesting question: What if there were a playoff between the varsity teams hailing from a single middle school? Chances are the Trition/Seahawk connection would fair rather well. Three varsity starters - Nick Crankshaw, Sam Darnold and Joe Mann - attended Shorecliffs, as did second-year varsity reserves Vince Smetona and Tyler Voigt. Between them, they average 39 points, 21 rebounds, 13 assists and 10 steals per game. In an age of recruitment and school-hopping in high school athletics, the "Shorecliffs Connection" is another example of the "One Town, One Team" philosophy coined by Triton Football.
