Based on the CIF-Southern Section poll released today, the Triton Varsity is facing a very competitive schedule during the 2014-15 season. Of the 16 California teams the Tritons will face this year, 10 of them are ranked in the poll. To view the full poll, click here.
The ranked teams include Thursday night's opponent, Tesoro, which is ninth in Division 2AA. San Clemente is unranked in Division 1AA, despite a victory over its No. 12 team, Tustin.
The Tritons played four games against non-California opponents during the Cactus Jam Tournament in Phoenix in late December.
Perhaps holding the Tritons back in the poll are its losses to ranked teams, Sonora (second in 3AA) and Canyon (5th in 2AA) early in the season, before a good part of San Clemente's lineup had reported from the football field. There are also the Jeckyll and Hyde performances against Woodbridge (ranked 16th in 2AA), a 16-point win followed by a 13-point loss.
Beside Tesoro, the only ranked team on the San Clemente schedule for the remainder of the season is El Toro, which is ranked 8th in 1A. The Chargers are currently 2-2 in South Coast League play, in third place behind the 4-0 Tritons and 3-1 Aliso Niguel.
