There was nothing average about the Triton Junior Varsity's three-point shooting in the first quarter. It hit six of seven, including four by junior Jake Cameron, to take a 24-11 lead at period's end. But then averages caught up with San Clemente as it hit on only one of its next 14 three-pointers, allowing Corona del Mar to stay in the contest until late.
Blake Birmingham led San Clemente (15-2, 1-1) with 16 points. Cameron wound up with 14, and Aidan Butler scored 11. Additional Triton points came from Isaac Rex, seven; Joey Spurgeon, five; and Evan Banks and Roberto Medrano, two each.
The Triton Junior Varsity returns to South Coast League action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it tips off at Mission Viejo.
