Against Troy, San Clemente appeared to be on the verge of turning the game into a rout, going up by as many as 22 points early in the third period. It still led by 19 with 1:19 left in the third when a series of overzealous full-court passes against Troy's defensive pressure led to turnovers, which the Warriors converted into points on their end. Troy got to within four twice in the final minute.
Besides Darnold, San Clemente got a season-high 16 points from Cade Griffin, 13 from Nick Crankshaw, eight from Gage Shelmidine and seven from Joe Mann. Crankshaw also led San Clemente in assists with six.
The Triton Varsity returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, January 9, when it travels to San Juan Hills.
