While he certainly had no knowledge of the 2013-14 Triton Basketball teams, and the players probably have very little knowledge of the iconic com-mentator, his analysis was certainly applicable to San Clemente Basketball this season.
During a year that went beyond just "the thrill of victory and agony of defeat," the Tritons definitely experienced "the human drama of athletic competition," as was said in the introduction to one of Cosell's shows, "ABC's Wide World of Sports."
The Tritons began the school year defending three champion-ships -- varsity, J.V and soph, and had high hopes of repeating and more with young (only three seniors) but talented lineups throughout the program.
Youth and injury would prove to be too much for the varsity to overcome, as it finished the season third in league, but with its sixth consecutive CIF Playoff berth. The team bowed out of the playoffs in the first round at Rancho Verde. Injuries to key personnel also would plague the junior varsity and sophomore squads.
Only five games into the season, the J.V. would lose its starting point guard to a season-ending injury. But after a few stumbles along the way, the team would rally for a share of its third straight league title.
The sophs would start the season with their point guard hobbled, and fell to 2-8 before his healthy return. From there, they went 11-3 the rest of the way, and wound up playing on the final day of the season for a share of the league title. That day's loss dropped them to third in league.
Largely escaping the drama and enjoying the most success was the freshman team. It went undefeated in league to win the championship outright. And its 24-1 record is the best freshman record in school history.
Further, the team avenged its only loss, and finished the season on a school record 23-game winning streak.
